Part 4:Concert recorded by HTV Wales at St. Davids Hall, Cardiff in 1985 in aid of the International Year of Youth. This video has been issued on many different VHS releases and also on laserdisc. Sadly this concert has yet to be released on DVD.Sleeve Note: Shirley Bassey, one of the handful of truly great performers in the entertainment business, returns to her native Wales for a gala concert and the evenings spectacular entertainment is captured here for posterity and for Shirleys legion of fans.I Am What I AmWritten by Jerry Herman Released in 1984 on a single and on another version with the London Symphony Orchestra on the album I Am What I Am. Along with classic This Is My Life, Shirley Bassey sings this song at the end of almost every concert. For this reason, it is available on many collections and live recordings. It can be found live on The Birthday Concert , The Diamond Collection and on the 2003 compilation Thank you for the Years. Live performances can also be seen on the videos An Audience With Shirley Bassey, You Aint Heard Nothing Yet and Divas Are Forever. After Shirley sings the word “ovation” in the line “give me the hook or the ovation” the audience usually breaks into applause. La Cage Aux FollesShort Synopsis This song is taken from the musical “La Cage Aux Folles” written by Jerry Herman. The musical is based on a French film with the same title. The premiere of this film was on August 21st, 1983 at the Palace Theatre in New York and it ran there for 1761 performances. In 1996 a new movie “The Birdcage” was made out of it with actors like Robin Williams and Gene Hackman. The musical is about the transvestite night-club “La Cage Aux Folles” in the seedy part of St. Tropez, France. Georges is the owner of the night-club and Albin is Georgess gay lover and star performer as ZaZa at the club. Georges son Jean-Michel from a previous marriage to a woman wants to marry a woman - the daughter of Dindon, a notoriously narrow-minded politician. Jean-Michel wishes to present himself as coming from a high moral background and invites his fiancĂ©es parents to his home where Georges has to remove anything that may be considered as inappropriate. Jean-Michels real mother should come to play an intact marriage, but calls to say that she cannot come. To the utter astonishment from the others, Albin walks in exclaiming “Heres Mother”, and takes her place. Albin is eventually de-frocked, it results in high insanity and it all ends up with Dindon and his wife dressing up in high-heels, tights and leotards. Although La Cage was Broadways first homosexual musical, it was nevertheless a mainstream production. Director Arthur Laurents didnt allow his lead characters so much as a peck on the cheek for fear that he might offend his audience.Lyrics I Am I Am What I Am:I am what I amI am my own special creationSo come take a lookGive me the hook or the ovationIts my world that I want to have a little pride inMy world and its not a place I have to hide inLifes not worth a damn till you can sayHey world I am what I amI am what I amI dont want praiseI dont want pityI bang my own drumSome think its noiseI think its prettyAnd so what if I love each feather and each spangleWhy not try and see things from a different angleYour life is a sham till you can sayHey world I am what I amI am what I amAnd what I am needs no excusesI deal my own deckSometimes the aceSometimes the deucesIts my life and theres no return and no depositOne life, so its time to open up your closetLifes not worth a damn till you can sayHey world I am what I am(Transcribed by Roman)Lyrics Big Spender:The minute you walked in the joint I could see you were a man of distinction, a real big spender Good looking, so refined Say, wouldnt you like to know whats going on in my mind? Joseph Alfred Souter (born February 28, 1940, in Atlanta, Georgia) is a Grammy Award-winning American singer-songwriter with a distinctive guitar sound.Joe South had several mega hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s with songs such as “Dont It Make You Wanna Go Home” and “Walk a Mile in My Shoes”. His biggest and most-remembered single was “Games People Play” (1969), a Top 10 hit on both sides of the Atlantic, which won the “Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Song” and the prestigious “Grammy Award for Song of the Year”, and which bears a striking resemblance to the childrens gospel song, “I Dont Want to Be a Pharisee”. It was featured on his first album, Introspect. He had met and was encouraged by Bill Lowery, an Atlanta music publisher and radio personality. He began his recording career in Atlanta with National Recording Corporation, where he served as staff guitarist along with other NRC artists Ray Stevens and Jerry Reed. Souths earliest recordings have been re-released by NRC on CD.Joe South songs have been recorded by other artists. They include Lynn Andersons 1971 hit “(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden”, Billy Joe Royals hit “Down in the Boondocks,” Deep Purples “Hush” (a British hit many years later for Kula Shaker), the Osmonds hit “Yo-Yo,” and Elvis Presleys Las Vegas-era version of “Walk a Mile in My Shoes”, also recorded by Bryan Ferry and Coldcut.South was also a prominent sideman, recording the memorable guitar part on Aretha Franklins Chain of Fools, Tommy Roes Sheila as well as appearing on Bob Dylans Blonde on Blonde. He also played the electric guitar part that was added to Simon & Garfunkels first hit, “The Sound of Silence”.The suicide of his brother Tommy drove South into a deep depression. Tommy had been his bands drummer and accompanied Joe not only in live performances but also on recording sessions of South-produced hits for other artists including Billy Joe Royal, Sandy Posey, and Friend & Lover.Joe South was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1979 and is a member of the Georgia Music Hall Of Fame.In 1988 dutch DJ Jan Donkers interviewed Joe South for VPRO-radio. The radio show where they aired the interview also included four new songs but a new record didnt came out.In 1994 Joe played in England. On september 13, 2003 Joe was inducted into Georgia Music Hall of Fame and played together with Buddy Buie, J.R. Cobb, Chips Moman at the induction ceremony.
